Welcome

DPW Elementary was built in 1965. Dr. Preston L. Williams, Jr. Elementary School was formerly named Prairie Elementary School. In the 2015-2016 school year, the name of the school was changed to Dr. Preston L. Williams, Jr. Elementary School, in honor of our school district’s First African-American Superintendent, an Urbana School District 116 retired teacher, coach, and school administrator. DPW Elementary has n on site After School Child Care Program that provides child care until 6 p.m. daily. 

Family Engagement

Dr. Williams’ students, staff and parents believe in the importance of working together to support student success and academic achievement. Parent/family activities and events are purposely scheduled at different times of the day to encourage attendance and enable parents to participate actively in their children’s education. There are many opportunities for parents to be involved and learn about Dr. Williams Elementary School whether through our volunteer program or open door classroom policy. School Goals

Math

By May of 2025, 60% of kindergarten through fifth grade students will meet their Mathematics growth projection on NWEA MAP.  Additionally, first through fifth grades will move to the high growth quadrants, while decreasing the number of students under the 40th percentile by 10% or 24 students.

  • As a School- Staff will provide students opportunities to practice math fluency and computation practice using daily math practice, engaging students in hands-on experiences using non-linguistic representations such as manipulatives, charts and visual tools to show their mathematical thinking.  Staff will send home math connections sheets to share classroom math skills and activities with parents. 
  • As a Parent/Family Member- Families will be invited to a family engagement math night that will provide families with resources and strategies to support their child’s math computation and fluency.  Parents will receive math tip sheets providing examples and ways to support mathematical reasoning within each unit at home. Families will be invited to share what they need in order to support their child at home. 
  • As a Student- Students will gain confidence and fluency in their math computation skills based on the standards for their grade level between the Fall and Spring Benchmarks.
Literacy

  • As a School- Staff will implement the Core Knowledge Language Arts program with fidelity. Staff will conduct reading assessments during the benchmarking periods to document student progress.  Staff will build knowledge and vocabulary in literature, history, geography and science. During daily instruction staff will engage students in reading, writing, listening and speaking. 
  • As a Parent/Family Member- Families will be invited into the classrooms for literacy activities during the school day.  Families will be invited to engage their readers in literacy tasks throughout the year using literacy tips in bi-monthly newsletters. They will provide examples of how to talk to students about books, helpful questions to ask after your child has finished reading a book, etc. 
  • As a Student- Students will read for approximately twenty minutes four nights per week to apply the skills they are learning at school.  
Attendance

By the end of the 2025-2026 academic year, our school will reduce our chronic absenteeism rate by 14% (from 123 to 77 students). Additionally, DPW will reduce the chronic absenteeism rate for black males by 22% (from 50 to 24).

  • As a School- Staff will inform families of the updated attendance policies, and communicate regularly through positive contacts home. Our Student Engagement Attendance Advocate will share parent tip sheets monthly informing families of the importance of being at school daily. 
  • As a Parent/Family Member- Families will be invited to an event focused on the importance of “Good Attendance” at school.  Resources will  be provided to parents during the event illustrating the importance of getting to school on time daily. Families will review school policies and expectations for student attendance. 
  • As a Student-Students will set goals for regular attendance that aligns with the updated attendance policy. Students will maintain a regular bedtime and morning routine in order to arrive at school on time each day. 
Culture and Climate

By the end of the 2025-2026 academic year, our school will reduce the total number of incidents of physical contact by 15% (from 242 to 205). Additionally, DPW will reduce the incidents of physical contact for black males by 20% (from 130 to 104) through enhancing student-teacher relationships, increasing student engagement, and fostering stronger school-family partnerships.

The research-based CHAMPS approach will help teachers create highly successful classroom management plans that will:

  • Include high expectations for all students’ success
  • Build positive relationships with students
  • Create consistent, predictable classroom routines
  • Teach students how to behave successfully
  • Observe and monitor student behavior and data
  • Provide frequent positive feedback
  • Correct misbehavior in a calm, consistent, and fluent manner

 

  • As a School- Staff will teach students practical strategies to engage in responsible behavior, build positive relationships, manage their work and understand acceptable ways to engage with instruction. 
  • As a Parent/Family Member-Families will be invited to an event focused on Social Emotional Learning at school.  Resources will  be provided to parents during the event illustrating how to support students’ social emotional learning at home.  Families will learn more about the CHAMPS framework, which uses social learning and behavioral principles to promote positive teacher-student interactions and help teachers structure their classrooms in ways that prompt responsible student behavior. The CHAMPS acronym (Conversation, Help, Activity, Movement, Participation, and Success) is used as a guide for teachers as they define behavioral expectations for students around specific instructional approaches.
  • As a Student-Students will continue to utilize appropriate problem-solving strategies and tools from our daily social emotional learning instruction.  By understanding and adhering to the CHAMPS guidelines, students will take responsibility for their own learning and contribute to a positive classroom environment.

Online registration for returning families closes July 16.

Centralized Registration is July 30 from 12-6 p.m. and July 31 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Urbana Middle School. All new families, and any returning families who have not registered online, should register their student(s) during Centralized Registration.

Centralized Registration is a one-stop shop. You can register your student, get required physicals or immunizations, meet school staff, pay fees, get food service information from Quest, talk to First Student/MTD about transportation, learn about after school care and more - all in one place.
