BLDD architects discussed the results of Urbana High School’s Feasibility and Design Program Study and talked about possible future improvements and updates needed at UHS to enhance opportunities and programming for students and staff.
A preliminary discussion included: - Secured entry: Having more staff/building admin positioned closer to the front door and allow for a more secure entrance
- Moving some of our Career and Technical Education programs to a new building: Agriculture, industrial technology/engineering, and automotive technology.
- Reconfigured space in the high school (where automotive and welding is currently located) for Family and Consumer Science – Interior design and sewing, pre-k, and culinary arts.
- Parking would be added and the flow of traffic would be reconfigured to ensure safety of walkers.
Cost: These numbers have been increased to better reflect estimated 2028 costs, since we are not building right now. - The new 22,000 square foot building would be roughly $11.5 million
- The parking area/drive reorganization $2.5 million
- Renovation of current spaces: $12.6 million
- Total: $26.6 million
Once we have a general design and program outline, we would be able to use a $250,000 grant given to use from the state on site work and parking, as long as it benefits our CTE programs in the future. The grant money has to be used this year or it gets reallocated. |

The Board was given an end-of-the-year overview of DIBELS and MAP Benchmark assessment data.
DIBELS: The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) is used to identify students who are at risk for future reading difficulties. This is a one-on-one screener; 5-6 minutes per screener per student. Screeners assess phonological awareness, phonics, fluency vocabulary, comprehension. This is given three times a year in grades K-5.
MAP: A computer adaptive assessment used to measure a student’s achievement level and growth over time. - Achievement: How well a student has learned skills in a subject compared to similar students nationwide
- Growth: A measure of a student’s progress over the year.
Summary of the data: The overarching pattern is one of systemic growth paired with persistent performance gaps. The district’s teaching and intervention strategies are successfully helping more students meet growth expectations year-over-year; however, achievement gaps between student demographic groups is still a great concern and focus for the district. |
