Cleaning and Sanitizing: USD116 Back to School FAQ

To help provide staff and families with the necessary information about the upcoming school year, we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions from staff, parents, teachers, and community members regarding USD116’s fall 2020 back to school plans. To address the most important concerns regarding our back to school plans, we’ve separated the FAQs in parts. We will be answering FAQs for the rest of the week leading up to the release of our detailed full Phase 4 back to school plan.

Today’s FAQs addresses concerns surrounding cleaning and sanitizing. If you have any questions that you feel have not been answered in this FAQ or though recent emails from The District, we encourage you to use the Phase 4 Back to School Safety Plan as a resource when it is released or please email us at contactus@usd116.org

What will the regular cleaning processes be? The District is following Centers of Disease Control and Prevention guidelines by establishing a schedule for performing ongoing and routine environmental cleaning and disinfection of high-touch areas (e.g., door handles, stair rails, faucet handles, toilet handles, light switches, desks, tables, chairs, kitchen countertops, cafeteria, carts, and trays) with an EPA approved disinfectant, and increasing frequency of disinfection during high-density times. We also have established our own daily sanitizing and disinfecting protocols along with restroom maintenance logs for all USD116 buildings.

What will cleaning consist of when someone with a confirmed case of COVID has been in a building? The District has established an enhanced disinfection protocol for cleaning following exposure. This plan includes contacting Facility Service to determine cleanup protocol and details, contacting USD116 Human Resources to notify all employees involved, clearing the area for a 24-hour resting period, and cleaning and disinfecting the building following meeting with administrators and providing cleaning staff (i.e. USD116 staff and ESS) with the appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) needed to complete the cleaning. The full plan can be viewed here.

What provisions for hand sanitizer have been made? All classrooms will have a touch-free hand sanitizer dispenser in the classroom space. Hand sanitizer units will be available at all main entrances and high traffic areas. Soap and water will also be available in classrooms and restrooms. Hand sanitizer receptacles will be readily available at the entrance of every main office and should be used upon entry to the main office. Hand sanitizer will also be provided for student classes/activities like Drivers Education, and will be readily available to assist those working with vulnerable student populations. We will be using 70% alcohol sanitizing wipes on all electronic devices and cleaning after every use.
