Dear Dual Language Parents/Families,

I am writing to update you on the recent discussions that have taken place regarding the Spanish Dual Language program.  On December 7, 2021, the Board of Education was presented with information regarding the current successes and challenges that are taking place within the K-12 Spanish Dual Language program.  In the presentation, the Multilingual Department Director, Guadalupe Ricconi, explained that there are many issues that need to be addressed immediately, as well as long term.  It was decided to form a Spanish Dual Language Planning and Evaluation Committee to help identify and determine next steps.

Some of the critical needs that have been identified by the department and the committee are the following:

• Planning for additional space needs for a large number of multilingual incoming kindergarteners 
• Strategically planning time for dual language teachers to collaborate together across elementary buildings and across the different levels
• Expanding the UMS schedules due to an increase in enrollment with a large 6th-grade class entering UMS
• Planning for a culturally and linguistically responsive school community for multilingual learners and families at UHS
• Recruitment of new staff for multiple positions and levels
• Retention of our current multilingual teachers and staff

In discussing the needs of the growing elementary program, as well as to address the need for teachers to collaborate across building, the committee is evaluating the pros/cons of the current “strand model” (that currently exists at Dr. Williams and Leal) or moving to a “whole building model”, where all Spanish Dual Language classes are housed together at one of the existing elementary schools.

Within the next couple of months the committee will be collecting feedback from students, DL Parents and District teachers in order to make a recommendation to the Board of Education prior to the end of the school year.  Should the recommendation be a model different to what currently exists, the District will spend the 2022-2023 school year to plan for implementation for the 2023-2024 school year.

Estimados padres/familias del programa dual:

Les escribo para compartir información sobre pláticas que hemos tenido con respecto al programa dual. El 7 de diciembre de 2021, se presentó a la Junta de Educación información sobre los éxitos y desafíos actuales que se han presentado dentro del programa de lenguaje dual de Kinder – 12avo grado. En la presentación, la directora de Programas Multilingües, Guadalupe Ricconi, explicó que hay muchas áreas que necesitan atención de inmediato.  Debido a eso, se decidió formar un Comité de Evaluación y Planificación de Lenguaje Dual para ayudar a identificar y determinar los próximos pasos.

Las prioridades identificadas por el comité incluyen: 

• Planificación de espacio adicional para una gran cantidad de niños multilingües que ingresarán a kínder 
• Tiempo de planificación estratégica para que los maestros bilingües colaboren en las dos escuelas primarias de Lenguaje Dual en español y en los diferentes niveles (es decir, K-8, 6 -12)
• Expansión de los horarios de UMS debido a un aumento en la inscripción con una gran clase de sexto grado que ingresara a UMS
• Planificación de una comunidad escolar cultural y lingüísticamente receptiva para estudiantes multilingües y familias en UHS
• Reclutamiento y retención de personal nuevo y actual para múltiples puestos y niveles

Al discutir las necesidades con respecto al crecimiento del programa de lenguaje dual, incluyendo la necesidad de que los maestros tengan tiempo para colaborar, el comité está considerando el diseño del programa que existe en Dr. Williams y Leal comparándolo con un modelo de una escuela que albergaría todas las clases de Lenguaje Dual en español en un solo edificio.

Dentro de los próximos meses, el comité estará recolectando comentarios de los estudiantes, los padres del programa y los maestros del Distrito para hacer una recomendación a la Junta de Educación antes del final del año escolar. Si la recomendación es un modelo diferente al que existe actualmente, el Distrito pasará el año escolar 2022-2023 planificando la implementación para el año escolar 2023-2024.
