Looking for a way to get involved in your student’s school day? Urbana School District #116 (USD116) schools will be hosting several National African American Parent Involvement Day (NAAPID) activities for parents and community members on Feb. 10.
National African American Parent Involvement Day is a day for parents to visit their children’s schools, see what their children experience daily at school, and support their children’s educational futures. With diversity and racial equity as long-standing values for The District, USD116 is looking forward to opening its doors for parents and community members of all races and backgrounds for the special day.
“NAAPID is not just for Black people– it’s for all people,” NAAPID creator Joe Dulin said. “It comes during Black History Month, and I thought it was a tremendous time to introduce it as a project for parents to get into our schools to exchange notes, phone numbers, emails, have conversations, and get in touch with teachers,” said retired educator and former principal Dulin.
Nine USD116 schools will be hosting activities, luncheons, and games for the upcoming day. Parents and community members can expect the following to happen at each USD116 location:
- Urbana Early Childhood School: Volunteers from the NAACP will be visiting classrooms to read books by African American authors all day.
- Leal Elementary School: All-day mentoring rooms for parents and students; culturally storytelling from NAACP volunteers; NAAPID luncheon/potluck 11:20 a.m.- 12:55 p.m.
- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School: NAAPID luncheon 11:05 a.m.- 12:40 p.m.
- Dr. Preston L. Williams Jr. Elementary School: Pastries with Parents 8:15 a.m.- 8:45 a.m. and Family Heritage and Family Tree Craft 8:45 a.m.- 9:30 a.m.
- Thomas Paine Elementary School: NAAPID parent luncheon/visitation
- Yankee Ridge Elementary School: NAAPID luncheon with visitation stations 10:50 a.m.- 1 p.m.
- Wiley Elementary School: Parent involvement activities, NAACP readers, and Family Tree Book Raffe (all day); Community Speakers at 12:15 p.m.
- Urbana Middle School: Strength Through My Voice showcase noon-1 p.m.
- Urbana High School: Parent/Student Collaboration activities 11 a.m.- 1 p.m.
