COVID-19 INFORMATION (UPDATED APRIL 17)

On Friday, April 17, Governor Pritzker extended the school closure and remote learning for the remainder of the school year.  During this extended closure, USD116 will continue to provide meals for our students via the drive-up sites and deliver food to specific neighborhoods with larger populations of children. We have and will continue to collaborate with community partners to provide additional groceries, school supplies, and remote learning materials via the drive up meal sites.

Please continue to visit the Learning Links site and our website where we have provided the tools you need to continue on your remote learning journey. Please contact us at remotelearning@usd116.org if you need any assistance with the Learning Links and at ChromebookHelp@usd116.org for your technology needs. We urge all families to stay connected with their schools and by following us on social media. Focus on taking care of one another during these challenging times and remember we are Urbana Better Together!

Above are videos from the Center of Disease Control. Urbana community members can watch for more information about COVID-19 information, prevention, and resources. For a full COVID-19 playlist from the CDC, please click here.

Food Options

USD116 is continuing to provide meals for our families to any child 18 and under during the extended school closure through the remainder of the calendar school year. Families are invited to visit any one of our sites to receive a breakfast and lunch meal bag. Each bag will contain one breakfast and one lunch for each student. Families are not required to visit a specific site, rather visit which of the four USD116 locations is most convenient for your family.  If you are without transportation, MTD is providing free rides to the community. For more information about available routes, please visit their website.

We have been providing meals at  King, Williams and UHS weekdays from 10 a.m. until noon. As of Monday, March 30, we added a new drive-up site for all USD116 families at YANKEE RIDGE Elementary.  Please view drive up site info below:

  1. Yankee Ridge: circle drive off of East Mumford Drive
  2. Dr. Williams Elementary: Front circle drive off Washington St.
  3. Dr. King Elementary: Goodwin circle drive
  4. Urbana High School: Door 9 on Tiger Lane off the gymnasium

When you arrive at the drive-up, everyone will be expected to follow these step-by-step directions:

  • Please remain in your vehicle with doors and windows closed
  • Indicate by hand signal how many meals bags you need for children 18 and under
  • We are all following social distancing guidelines, so please remain in your vehicle, while a staff member brings out the meals and places them on the table
  • After the staff member has entered the building, please exit your vehicle, collect your meals, then return to your vehicle and exit the drive-up meal line

USD116 will also be providing deliveries to specific neighborhoods with large populations of children. School districts were encouraged by the Illinois State Board of Education to feed as many students as possible, and these deliveries will allow us to provide meals to an additional 500 students each day. A meal bag with a breakfast and lunch will be delivered to these communities by 10 a.m. Meals will only be available until 10:45 to maintain the freshness of the meals. We are providing meals based on the number of USD116 students residing in the following areas:

  • Countryview: Meals will be available out by the front mailboxes in the Circle Drive
  • Ivanhoe: Meals will be available at the pavilion at the park
  • Liberty Commons: Meals will be available in the community room by the office
  • Loral: Meals will be available at 29 Fern St. in the empty pad
  • Northwood: Meals will be available in the Pavilion by the playground
  • Woodland Acres: Meals will be available in the front porch of office
  • Woods Edge: Meals will be available under the flagpole at the entrance.

To get more information about Grab & Go options, please email USD116MEALS@USD116.ORG.

Remote Learning

On March 31, The District  “officially” began our planning for Remote Learning. We, as a District, worked collaboratively with administrators, teachers, instructional coaches, and other teacher leaders to create our remote learning plan and prepare for implementation starting Monday, April 6, 2020.   As you read through the plan, you will find the new Learning Links site which will provide instructional resources for all PreK-12 students. Please visit our USD116 Remote Learning page for all the tools you need to get started on the remote learning journey.

Remote learning is learning that happens outside of the traditional classroom because the student and teacher are separated by distance and/or time. Remote learning can be real-time or flexibility scheduled, and it may or may not involve technology. We are not assuming that every family or every student has access to the necessary devices and appropriate internet connection at their home.  We are doing our very best to try to do what we can in this area. You should be receiving a call in the next few days from a USD116 staff member to discuss your access to technology and internet at home. Starting Wednesday, April 1, we will also be distributing school supplies to families who need them through the drive up meal sites at King, Dr. Williams, Yankee Ridge and Urbana High School.

Calendar Information

On March 15, our district received new information from Governor Pritzker’s office and the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) stating that all days missed during the mandated closing will now be counted at “Act of God Days”, meaning that USD116 will now NOT make up those days at the end of the year. This means, with the absence of snow days, our last day of school will continue to be May 28.

Traveling

As spring break approaches, we would like to urge you to be thoughtful regarding your travel plans. We understand that many of you have planned your trips ahead of COVID-19, but it is important for you to know that per IDPH guidance, any student or staff member returning from a location with sustained widespread transmission (CDC Travel Warning of Level 3) should not attend school for 14 days after the return date. If a student, staff member or volunteer returns  from an affected geographic location within the past 14 days or is in contact with a COVID-19 case, and develops respiratory symptoms including fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, school personnel will immediately report the matter to the local health department/IDPH. As a school district, we are under obligation to provide a safe, healthy work learning environment for all. If a student, staff member, or volunteer is identified through a screening IDPH will make a decision regarding quarantine and exclusion, and USD116 will follow through on their recommendation. Therefore, if you or a member of your household presents symptoms or is exposed to the virus, you may be required to stay at home. All student absences will be excused. Current information on travel warnings is available on the Center of Disease Control’s website.

We urge all USD116 families, staff, and community members to stay connected with USD116 via social media and check this new COVID-19 webpage for any updates. We will continue to share the guidance and expectations we receive from the state as news develops. We appreciate your understanding and support as the health and wellness of our USD116 community is our primary focus.
