MUSIC PROGRAMS

Elementary: 5th grade students across the District are given 30 minute group lessons twice a week at their elementary school. through a “pull-out” program which means that students are pulled from their regular class in order to have their lessons. Students who sign up for band are given the opportunity to learn to play the flute, clarinet, trumpet, or trombone.  Students who sign up for strings are given the opportunity to learn to play the violin, viola, or cello.Students in these programs will have three concerts throughout the year where they will meet as a group of all 5th grade students from the district in band and strings (All-City Concerts).

UMS: UMS has a 6th Grade Band, Choir, and Orchestra.  Students are also given the opportunity to begin playing an instrument in the Beginning 6th Grade Band or Strings Classes.  There is a 7th Grade Band, Choir, and Orchestra.  Again, at the 7th grade level, there is another opportunity to being playing an instrument in the Beginning 7th Grade Band or Strings Classes.  There is an 8th Grade Band, Choir, and Orchestra.In addition to these ensembles that meet during the school day, there is a Concert Band, Concert Choir, Concert Orchestra, and Jazz Band that meet before school.  These ensembles are an enrichment opportunity for students who are excelling in their daily ensembles.  

UHS: UHS has two concert bands: Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony. These two bands also makeup the Pep Bands that perform at home basketball games. The Tiger Marching Band begins its season with band camp during the summer, and they perform at home football games, parades, and competitions throughout the fall. UHS also houses Symphonic Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Urbana Singers, Concert Choir, and Honors Choir. In addition to these ensembles that meet during the school day, there are two A Cappella vocal groups, a Jazz Band, and a Jazz Combo.  These ensembles are an enrichment opportunity for students who are excelling in their daily ensembles.  These groups are selected by audition and/or invitation.

The Evelyn Burnett Underwood (EBU) Instrumental Assistance Program: The EBU Instrumental Assistance Program provides musical instruments to low income students who want to participate in the instrumental music programs in the Urbana Schools. Student requirements include a desire to learn, an agreement to meet the expectations of the class, and a financial need.

MULTILINGUAL PROGRAM

The Urbana School District Multilingual Program provides Emerging Bilingual Students, students whose native language is not English, and are developing both the native language and English, the opportunity to receive equal and equitable access to education. USD116 values the diversity of our student population. On average there are approximately 750 students who speak a language other than English in USD 116. Of those students, there are approximately 400 English Language Learners (ELLs) attending USD 116 schools, which is approximately 10% of our total student population. ELLs are students who are still developing their English proficiency and are eligible to participate in our Bilingual & Multicultural Programs. There are over 40 different languages represented from our student population and our students come from countries in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. 

SPLASH & 21ST CENTURY LEARNING

21st Century Learning Grant programs is a federally funded grant program providing funds for after-school enrichment programs. Urbana School District #116 is a proud recipient of this program and grant money from other organizations such as the City of Urbana and the Urbana Park District to fund our after-school enrichment programs. These programs include 21st Century programs at Urbana High School, SPLASH (Students Playing and Learning After School) at UMS and SPLASH Jr., at Leal.

BEFORE-AFTER SCHOOL CHILDCARE PROGRAM

The Before & After School Child Care Program is an extra curricular part of the Urbana School District. It provides a safe, supervised place for children in grades K-5 before school from 6:45 a.m. until school begins and after regular school hours until 6 p.m. It is operated by Urbana School District #116 and currently uses space at Leal, Dr. Williams, Thomas Paine, Wiley, and Yankee Ridge Elementary Schools. We offer an excellent staff of Recreation Leaders at each site to lead your child in a well-balanced recreation program. Our program offers supervision and leadership in a variety of areas including recreational activities, occasional special interest projects, reading, homework opportunities and a limited number of field trips. A light breakfast and afternoon snack is served daily.

The Before & After School Child Care Program is a self-supporting program. The cost of the program is covered through the payments of the program participants. Any child enrolled in an Urbana School District elementary school may be enrolled in the program. Children may join Before School, After School or both. To enroll and for fee information, contact Chad Harper or Terry Napper at 217-384-3536 or 217-384- 3633. Their office is located at DPW Elementary.
