Fifth Grade Physical is Good for Students Entering Sixth Grade
[posted 4/21/08 - 9/4/08]
A new law this year mandates all students entering 6th grade to have a physical. The old law stated that students entering 5th grade needed a physical. District 116 wants parents to know that if your child has a 5th grade physical on file with the District; you will NOT need to have your child take another physical for 6th grade.
The new law states 6th graders will be required to turn in school physicals for entrance to school. Since this law was passed late in August and 5th graders already got their physicals this school year, the State is waiving the rules for the 08-09 school year. The State Board of Education has said that if a child has a current 5th grade physical on file for the 07-08 school year, they will NOT need to repeat one for entrance into 6th grade for the 08-09 school year.
This waiver is only for the 08-09 school year. We will start requiring the 6th grade physicals for the 2009-10 school year.
The rules for kindergarten and 9th grade physicals are unchanged.
District 116 and Urbana Middle School officials will work with parents to make sure that each student has a proper physical before entering school.

UHS Mykhail Chambers wins State Championship in High Jump
[posted 5/27/08 - 7/22/08]
Urbana High School Senior Mykhail Chambers has won the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) State Championship in the track and field high jump competition. Chambers won the state championship this past weekend at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.
Chambers qualified for the state championships for three straight years placing 3rd and 6th. He was one of the favorites this year, but had to endure a tough competition before prevailing. Chambers won the state championship in the high jump by jumping six feet, eight inches. Another competitor also jumped 6'8", but Chambers won the tie-breaker due to the fact that he had fewer misses over the entire meet than his rival.
Chambers celebrated his state championship by marching in the UHS Commencement on Sunday. Chambers will compete in track and field at Georgia Tech University beginning this fall.
Congratulations to Mykhail Chambers for winning the State Championship!
