Thanks to Alumni Association!

A big thank you to the Urbana Alumni Association for their recent donations. Tina Gunsalus, Jerry Ragle and Mary Klein representing the Association presented the following grants at the April 3, 2007 Board of Education meeting:


Membership in the Alumni Association is open to all who have an interest in supporting the children and schools of Urbana District #116. You do not have to be an Urbana High School graduate or Urbana schools alumni to join. An annual membership is $25, and a lifetime membership is $500. If you'd like to join, send your dues to Urbana Alumni Association, P.O. Box 355, Urbana, IL 61803.

Since its inception in 1995, the Alumni Association has awarded $570,000 to district programs supporting our children. Thank you Urbana Alumni Association!

Visit Squeakapalooza - an open house showcasing students' work

You are invited to Squeakapalooza - Squeak Night in Champaign/Urbana - a Math/Science/Technology open house featuring the work of Urbana Middle School students and other students.

Tuesday, May 1 from 6:30-9 p.m. at 1404 Siebel Center (The Siebel Center for Computer Applications is at 201 N. Goodwin, Urbana - just south of University Avenue, south of the new parking garage on the corner of Goodwin and University.)

The event is hosted by UIUC Department of Computer Science, Office for Math, Science, and Technology Education, College of Education - www.squeakcmi.org

6:30-7:30 p.m. Students and families are invited to view the work of local elementary and middle school students, including students from UMS.

8-9 p.m. Local educators and any interested adults are invited to a "Squeak" informational session and panel. Squeak is a free software environment useful in all disciplines, which challenges our kids to use technology to explore, to create, to think and to learn. Squeakapalooza invitation

Give ideas about walking / biking to school at May 1 meeting

You are invited to give your opinions and ideas on how to improve walking and bicycling to school in our community at the Tuesday, May 1 Board of Education Study Session. The Urbana School District is applying for grant funding for projects that enable and encourage safe walking and bicycling to school. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Jean F. Burkholder Administrative Service Center, 205 North Race Street, Urbana.

Several groups in the County have been working on a draft of a School Travel Plan which includes ideas for to improve safe walking and biking to school. Please review this plan and give us your opinions on the ideas in the plan as well as any others you would like us to consider at the May 1 meeting. Thank you.

UMS Open House

Urbana Middle School will hold an open house on Wednesday, April 25 from 7 - 8:30 p.m. for 5th graders who will be making the move to the Middle School in the fall.

Junior/Parent college planning night at UHS
The Urbana High School Guidance and Counseling Staff is sponsoring a Junior/Parent College Planning Night at Urbana High School on Wednesday, April 18 from 6 to 7 p.m. in the lecture hall, room 2199.

UMS Open House
Urbana Middle School will hold an open house on Wednesday, April 25 from 7 - 8:30 p.m. for 5th graders who will be making the move to the Middle School in the fall.

Prairie State Achievement Tests at UHS
The Prairie State Achievement Tests will be taken on Wednesday, April 25 and Thursday, April 26 at Urbana High School.

Car Wash fundraiser TODAY - Fri., April 20

Today (Friday, April 20) from 3:30 - 5:45 p.m. Yankee Ridge and Thomas Paine After School Programs are hosting car washes at both the schools to raise money for their end of the year picnic. Any donation amount is appreciated.
