Dear Preschool Families of Dr Martin Luther King Jr Elementary School,
We hope you’ve had a wonderful winter break! We are excited to begin a new semester and to focus on a smooth and successful transition for our students who will be moving into Kindergarten next year.
There are a few things for you to be aware of:
For personal reasons, two of our teaching assistants, Jon Gouilliard in room 7, and Catty Su, room 8, have resigned their positions. Mr Jon’s last day was just before break. We are pleased to welcome Diamond Moraga to Ms Aleta’s class, room 8. Ms Diamond’s strong background in Early Childhood and Special Education and love of children is a great addition to the classroom team. Ms Catty’s last day is January 11th.
As you may know, the preK classrooms are primarily funded through the Illinois State Board of Education Preschool for All Expansion Grant. One of the components of the grant is that our classrooms receive a monitoring visit to ensure that we are providing the best education possible and meeting all requirements of the grant. This ISBE contracts with the National Louis University to conduct the compliance visit. The assessors will look at our student files to ensure that all records are in order. They will review lesson plans and spend time observing in the classrooms and rate staff/student interactions to ensure that they are positive and engaging. They will look at the spaces, materials, and activities that the students have access to ensure that they are safe and appropriate. They will interview staff about practices and may talk to parents about the quality of the program.
We don’t know the exact date(s) of the compliance visit; but we do know that the assessors will arrive sometime between January 14th -February 4th. Approximately 8 weeks after the visit, the assessors will send us a quality rating and report that includes areas in which we are doing well and areas in which we need to improve. We’ll use that information to write a Continuous Quality Improvement Plan and report our work to the State each school year. Of course, we’ll be glad to share that information with our families.
If you have any questions about the monitoring visit, please don’t hesitate to ask. You are welcome to talk to your child’s teacher, Ms. Aleta or Ms. Alicia, or principal Ms. Cail-Lewandowski, or Ms. Cris Vowels, the preschool administrator at Urbana Early Childhood School.
Thank you for your support of the preschool program,
Attention Dr. King School Families
