FIGHT AT URBANA HIGH SCHOOL


On Monday, February 4, 2019 at approximately 11:46 a.m. Urbana police officers and various medical personnel were dispatched to the Urbana High School for a report of a fight and a teacher that was unconscious. Officers arrived approximately 1 minute later and located a large fight in a main hallway near the cafeteria. Officers also located the teacher in need of medical assistance. Officers began to break up the fight and tend to
the teacher.


Through the course of the investigation, it has been determined that two groups of students engaged in a fight near the cafeteria. A teacher attempted to intervene and appears to have been battered. The teacher fell to the ground and several students accidentally fell on the teacher.
A total of eight arrests have been made as of this afternoon. Of the eight, seven were juveniles. Their information will not be released to the public as it is protected by the Juvenile Court Act. The juveniles were arrested on a variety of charges including mob action and resisting/obstructing a peace officer. The eighth person was an adult that had come to the school. That person, Adrian C. Pettis, a 35-year-old Urbana woman was arrested for resisting/obstructing a peace officer.


The investigation into the fight continues and further charges and arrests may be forthcoming. Urbana police officers and detectives were assisted in the initial call and investigation by officers and deputies from the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office, Champaign Police Department, and University of Illinois Police Department.


Urbana School District 116 staff determined that students would be released early and officers were present during dismissal. The Urbana Police Department will be providing extra officers, along with the school resource officer, at Urbana High School in the immediate future. School will resume as normal tomorrow, February 5, 2019.

As with all cases, the fact that a person has been charged with a crime does not necessarily indicate guilt and all persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
