We’re an Urbana homeschooling family. I am wondering who I would need to speak with about testing one of my children for potential learning disabilities. Thanks! 31. August 2015

A:  Thank you for your question.  For questions about testing for learning disabilities, please contact Todd Taylor, Assistant Superintendent for Student Services by email at or by phone at 384-3645. Thanks again!

Does the 2013-14 UHS dress code still apply? I can’t find anything more recent. 20. August 2015

A:  Thanks for your question.  The UHS Student Handbook, which includes the UHS dress code, can be found on the UHS web site – Student Handbook page. The 2015-2016 handbook, which was passed out to Freshmen during Orientation on Wednesday, August 19. All other students received it today, Thursday, August 20.  The Handbook will be available on-line (the link above) shortly.

If a parent has made payment arrangements for their children’s registration fees and the child wants to try out for a particular sport, can the school make excetptions to allow the child to try out for a team? 20. August 2015

A:  Thanks for the question!  Our Athletic Department at UHS will always try and work with families regarding payments for athletics. There is an athletic fees of $50/sport (max $100/year) unless a family qualifies for either of the following:

No Registration Fee = no athletic fee
Reduced Registration Fee = $25 athletic fee
It has been UHS practice to have the fees to be paid prior to practice/tryouts, but they are also willing to set up a payment plan if the family communicates with the Athletic Director’s office.

What vaccination/immunization do high school seniors need? Will they be bale to attend school if they do not have them when school begins? 19. August 2015

A:  Thanks for your question.  Current UHS seniors received a letter in the mail this summer if they needed any vaccinations or immunizations.  Those students will have until October 1, 2015 to provide proof of immunization.  Students who are new to the District this year will be told at the time of registration what health information is needed.  If you think your HS student should have received a letter and didn’t, please check with Darcy Widener, in the USD116 Administrative Service Center, at 384-3651.

Skyward is very user friendly, however; is not updated on a frequent basis. For example, assigned homework, tests, quizzes, etc are not updated by the teachers on a regular basis. Putting the assignments in the grade book with total points possible and not graded causes the grades to reflect as the assignment wasn’t submitted and giving parents the assumption their child has a lower grade, in which, the assignment wasn’t graded yet. Will Skyward be improved? 19. August 2015

A:  Thank you for your question.  Skyward contains a live version of a teachers grade book, and is used in this manner by teachers at UMS and UHS.  Parent access to the grade book enables you to see the most up-to-date version of the teacher’s grade book for your student. It is important for families to know that final grades are not issued until the end of the grading term (or end of the quarter at UMS). If the Skyward grade has not been updated in a reasonable amount of time from when something was turned in, please contact the teacher.  If still not resolved, please contact the building principal.
