Dr. Joseph Wiemelt selected for English Language Specialist Program

Urbana – Dr. Joseph Wiemelt, Director of Equity and Secondary Bilingual Programs, was selected to participate in the English Language Specialist Program by the US Department of State and Georgetown University.  Dr. Wiemelt will be on assignment in Andalusia, Spain for three weeks in November 2017.

The ELS program, one of two initiatives sponsored by the US State Department, “sends experts in the field of English language education to lead intensive English language teacher training projects overseas.”  These Specialists have been sent to over 80 countries across Africa, the Americas, East Asia and the Pacific, Eurasia, South Asia, and the Middle East.

“I am both honored and grateful for the opportunity to work as an English Language Specialist with the US Department of State,” said Dr. Wiemelt.  He was matched with a program in southern Spain, where he will work with bilingual teachers and provide teaching workshops in Seville, Cádiz, and Málaga.  He will also spend some time with education officials from Andalusia to provide information regarding bilingual education policy.

“I am excited to be working with, and learning from, our colleagues in Spain and expanding bilingual education across the globe,” he continued. “While I will be facilitating workshops for bilingual teachers abroad, I also look forward to building upon this experience to expand our bilingual programs here in Urbana School District 116.”
