Lesson 6:

Analyzing Photographs

Pleasant Valley School, St. Joseph, Illinois, 1895

1.  Students should choose a recorder from each table.  Hand out a copy of the Pleasant Valley School photograph to each table.

2.  Give students enough time to look over the picture and discuss among themselves what they see in the photograph.

3.  The student recorder writes down the group answers to the questions on the modified analysis worksheet for the photograph.

4. Project an overhead transparency of the modified photo analysis worksheet. Ask students to provide their answers to the worksheet.

* Provide copies of other photos from photographs from Champaign County Historical Archives for students to look at and discuss, focusing on questions from modified Photo Analysis Worksheet
