Lesson 4:
Prep for Trip
Purpose and Preparation: This lesson will give students an understanding of
the magnitude of the Lewis and Clark undertaking, and will detail specific
purchases that are related to the success of the trip.
Before looking at the documents,
the class will plan a weekend trip to Chicago (or a place of the teacherÕs
choosing) to determine what actions are taken, expenses anticipated, and
purchases are made before taking a trip.
For grade level differentiation, this can be done as whole group, small
group or pairs.
Subsequently, the teacher
will show LewisÕs initial expense estimate for the expedition.
The teacher will use the
following primary-source documents from the Lewis and Clark journals.
Details cost and gifts for
Indians.
Continues with details of
gifts for Indians.
Details
purchases for equipping the camp.
Detail of the scientific
instruments purchased for mapping.
Summary of
guns and ammunition as well as medicine.
Clothing and tools purchased
for the expedition.
The boat and transportation
costs.
Assessment: Class discussion will center on the
magnitude of the expedition. Teacher will then choose ten items to display, and
students will choose three and explain the importance of taking those things on
the expedition.
