Lesson 4 – My Thoughts on Going to World War I

Length: 1-2 class periods

 

Set-up: Individual

 

Procedures:

¤  Explain to students they will be writing a newspaper editorial about whether or not young American men and women should support the war effort and join as a soldier or nurse. Students can not choose both sides; they must choose one opinion and then find facts in documents they read and used throughout this unit to back up their opinion.

¤  Pass out the Editorial Planning Sheet. Tell students they will be basing their editorial off of this graphic organizer. Students should use unit worksheets and primary documents to completely fill out the Editorial Planning Sheet.

o   Pass out to students any worksheets/graphic organizers they turned in.

o   You will want to have copies of all the primary sources used in this unit accessible to students.

¤  After the students fill out the Editorial Planning Sheet they should write their newspaper editorial. The editorial should be well written and have strong evidence from primary sources to support the their opinion.

 

 

National & Local Primary Sources: Any and all sources students used in this unit.

 

Assessment: The Editorial Planning Sheet as well as the final copy of the newspaper editorial discussing whether or not young American men and women should support the war effort and join as a soldier or nurse.
