Day 3: Lincoln’s
Occupations
Activities:
Treasure Hunt – Have two
students take eight treats somewhere and write the directions to find them on a
piece of paper. It could be on the
playground, or in the school.
Six kids use the map to find the “treasure.” For younger children they could just write landmarks for
older ones they should use rulers and use exact measurements. When they find the treat, all of the children
get to have one!
Champaign County’s Lincoln - Watch the
DVD Champaign County’s Lincoln –
provided by The Early American Museum in Mahomet, Illinois. One was provided to each School Library
and Third Grade teacher in Champaign County.
Stovepipe hat - Make a stovepipe
hat and get some envelopes to put in the top to keep your important papers in. Teacher note: I would recommend making
one before you make one in front of your class. When completed it makes a GREAT hat. However, it took me a couple of tries.
As I was creating my
sample hat, I thought it would be neat to make one out of a Pringle’s can and
children could place pencils in it on the tops of their desks. Then I thought that might be too tall.
You or a parent could remove the lids off cans with that can opener that takes
off the whole lid - So that you do not have sharp edges. The students could
make a “hat” out of that. It would look so cool for all of your students to
have a little hat sitting on the tops of their desks!
