Lesson 1:
Defining Vocabulary
Vocabulary was a big problem in this case, because neither party wanted to
agree on an accurate definition for the differences and similarities between
segregation and racial imbalance. In the document provided in this lesson, the
students can see a portion of the argument over the terms.
Objective: Students should be able to understand the meaning of
vocabulary involved in the case to distinguish and compare terms throughout the
lessons.
Materials: Paper
divided into 4 squares, Crayons and/or other art supplies, Case Samples (Appendix
pg. 3)
Vocabulary Words: Plaintiff, Defendant, Equality, Equity, Racial Imbalance
Have the kids identify the words using a dictionary, and then complete the
graphic organizer determining the antonym, synonyms and other examples of the
words.
