Abstract

Now it is time for the students to put their own ideals into action.  This lesson encourages students to look at their own lives and chose something they think needs to be changed in the world or in their community or country.

Assessment

Three artifacts, Project worksheet

Procedure

1.    Put students into groups of 2-4 (depending upon the needs of your classroom).

2.    Hand out the worksheet and explain the following:

a.    They need to find a cause in which the entire group believes.

b.    This does not necessarily have to be a brand new movement.  They simply need to create a cause that is in need of change.  (so if its something already happening, they have to put a twist on it, like getting something passed in Champaign if it is currently a national movement)

c.    Explain the importance of taking seriously the question about who might disagree.

3.    Groups should complete the brainstorm graphic organizer before creating their artifacts.  This will help them focus on the possibilities and keep in mind the different people they will be addressing.  Then, they will chose three artifacts from their brainstorm that they will actually create.

4.    Discuss with the students the various forms of communication they can create:

a.    Poster

b.    Music

c.    Poems

d.    Political cartoon

e.    Billboards

f.     Meetings

g.    Educational materials

h.    Mass emails

i.      Banners

j.      Buttons

k.    Websites

l.      Publications

m.   And much more!

5.    Also, discuss with the students how to make their messages effective and influential.
